What is Sutika Paricharya?
Sutika Paricharya refers to the scientifically designed postnatal care regimen in Ayurveda that aims to restore a mother’s physical strength, hormonal balance, digestion, and mental well-being after childbirth. This period is crucial for recovering from the changes and fatigue experienced during pregnancy and delivery, and for regaining overall health.Typically, Sutika Paricharya is followed from day 1 to day 40 after delivery. However, the exact duration and practices may vary depending on the mother’s health condition and the type of delivery (Normal / C-section) as advised by a doctor.
Restoration of the Uterus (Uterine Health) The process of the uterus returning to its pre-pregnancy size and position (involution). In Ayurveda, this involves ensuring the complete clearance of afterbirth fluids (lochia).
Balancing the Vata Dosha According to Ayurveda, childbirth leaves “empty spaces” in the body, which can lead to an imbalance of Vata (air/ether elements). Balancing this helps prevent body aches, anxiety, and digestive issues.
Boosting Immunity and Strength Focusing on rejuvenating the mother’s physical stamina and immune system, which are often depleted after the rigors of labor.
Enhancing Lactation (Stanyajanana) Using galactagogues (milk-boosting foods and herbs) to ensure a healthy and consistent supply of breast milk for the newborn.
Metabolic and Digestive Recovery Normalizing the “digestive fire” (Agni). Post-delivery digestion can be weak, so the focus is on light, warm, and easily absorbable nutrients to restore metabolic balance.
Mental Well-being Addressing emotional stability and hormonal shifts to prevent postpartum blues or exhaustion, ensuring the mother feels supported and calm.
